Although we own a Cuisinart Food processor, there are times when it's just a hassle to use and clean especially for relatively quick preparations. For quick shredded cheese or other small items, these hand-held graters are just the right device. I own the full line of microplane graters including both the regular series and the "professional" line which is all stainless. This Pinzon/Tom Douglas version compares to the standard kitchen line of microplane - ie, the handle is not full stainless. However, it does have comfortable grip and can be put into the dishwasher.
Another very nice thing about this unit is the hand-held slider attachment which helps protect the fingers especially when grating things like ginger root which I love for fresh tea or asian cooking.
So - to summarize/compare to other available models
Sharpness is the equal to the other "major brand" (ie microplane). I've owned my first set of microplane graters for 4+ years and use almost...Read more

Another great product from Microplane.
My only complaint comes from one of the stickers on the backside of the grater. One of them is a glossy sticker, with some blurbs about Tom Douglas, care for the grater, watch out, it's sharp, etc. Peels off with no leftover adhesive.
The OTHER sticker is one of those really thin paper ones with mega-adhesive... it has a UPC bar code and "assembled in Mexico" on it. The sticker just disintegrates as you try to pull it off, and even then, the adhesive is left on the grater.
It took me about 20 minutes with Goo Off to get the remaining paper bits and adhesive off. Like I said... annoying sticker.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I reviewed my Microplane coarse grater on Amazon in 2002. I praised the tool and remarked that I've given several as gifts because I believe that a good cook deserves the best tools. Amazon teamed up with Microplane and Tom Douglas to create an even better coarse grater and I must praise this even more than my previous version. The handle on this new model is larger, rounder and easier to grasp. I imagine that the hand would not tire because of the improved ergonomic shape, reminiscent of OXO products. Whereas the previous model has a plastic frame, this new version is metal and it has the added bonus of a curled lip with a rubberized edge that allows its user to move it over a plate or paper without slipping. The previous version did not have the extension at all. The grater component is still fantastic, producing uniform shreds of your choice of textures. Although dishwasher safe, I prefer to wash and dry this by hand. I would also recommend spending the extra few dollars...Read more
