Breakfast is, after all, the most important meal of the day, so shouldn't it be treated with respect? Even in the dark of a mid-winter's morn you'll be able to see what you're doing thanks to the lighted control panel. Bagels? Frozen strudel? No problem, this toaster is designed to hold, toast, warm, and reheat.

Amazon.com Review

This single-slot digital toaster from KitchenAid not only toasts most widths of bread to perfection but also warms pastries, gets bagels just right, and handles frozen items intelligently. A simple user-friendly display governs all these functions, with a dial for browning preference and three buttons for the "warm," "frozen," and "bagel" options. The "warm" function heats without toasting, while the "frozen" function gently thaws, then toasts. The "bagel" function toasts the cut side 100 percent and the crust 50 percent. Each function includes an indicator light, and the digital display shows the selected browning level. If you toast several servings in a row, KitchenAid's Even Heat system adjusts cooking time to ensure consistent results.

Structurally, the toaster is sound and accommodating, holding two slices at a time. The toasting rack automatically centers bread between the elements, and the Soft Rise feature raises finished toast high for easy removal. The toaster also features heavy-duty heating elements, a full-width dishwasher-safe crumb tray, a stainless-steel interior, and stain-resistant polycarbonate housing. The power cord has an especially tidy feature--it wraps out of sight underneath the toaster for storage or shortening. The unit measures 5-1/4 by 14-1/2 by 8 inches and wipes clean easily with a damp cloth. --Emily Bedard

3.0 out of 5 stars Toasts 2 or 4 slices fine, burns 1 or 3 slices, January 21, 2003

This toaster works ok, but not nearly as well as I had hoped. You can toast either 2 or 4 slices quite well, but if you try to toast a single slice or 3 slices, the slice that is by itself always ends up burnt. Kitchen Aid would have done much better by making this toaster with four individual slots, rather than 2 long slots. A single slice of toast just can't take all the heat that the long slot puts out. Also, you always have to turn down the heat for subsequent batches by at least 1 notch, even though KitchenAid claims you will not have to. I did time it, and subsequent batches are shorter, as they are supposed to be, but the toast still gets burnt if you don't turn it down. Tried the frozen function with bread and it worked fine. Haven't tried bagels yet.

1.0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it less than 1 star!, December 15, 2002

I bought this when it cost a lot more, and that was only a few weeks ago. It has been a lousy performer, toasting VERY unevenly. And it's just about impossible to know what setting to use if you use a variety of breads. The toaster responds differently to just about every kind of bread I've used. And not only that, it has responded differently to the same kind of bread from different loaves. The bagel setting, which was a big attraction for me, is a bummer. It would toast the cut side, albeit unevenly, but the other side which is supposed to toast at half power didn't get toasted at all. It merely got warm. And speaking of warm, the toaster sits higher than others you'll find in stores and it puts out a tremendous amount of heat. It scorched the bottom of the cupboard that hangs on the wall above where this toaster sat on my counter. What was once a white cupboard is now a yellowish/brown. I have never had this happen before with a toaster. Why is it so impossible to find a good...Read more

First, I have to admit that I read some of the other reviews and was shocked by what I saw. It's what made me decide to write a review in the first place. I've found that this toaster is reliable and consistent. I've never had any problems with it burning anything I've toasted, be it a bagel or a slice of bread. It toasts everything evenly and perfectly, every time. If you've ever bought anything from Kitchen Aid, you'll find that, as with most of their products, it lives up to the name. Is it going to revolutionize cooking? No. It's a toaster. But if you're looking to start off the morning with a good piece of toast, a bagel, or an english muffin - perfectly toasted - then this is the toaster for you.
