I've had my Blendtec mixer for 5 years now, and the old "jar" finally crapped out on me. The coupling got out of alignment, and the plastic that houses the bearings cracked. This let water in, and the mechanism eventually got so gummed up, that it wasn't performing as it should. I just got the larger jar (with the 4" blade) and WOW, what a difference. I use this to grind fresh coffee beans, and now I have to back off a bit -- the last batch turned out to be espresso! Anyway, this thing is great for larger mixes, and the larger blade does in fact make a difference in performance. I'm docking one star because the new lid style isn't to my taste. It's kinda hard to describe, but the center part is hard plastic, and it pulls out of the rubber surround a bit too easily. Probably not a deal-breaker for most, but it is different, so I thought I'd point it out.

There is no need for the smaller jar. This jar does everything - we use it at least twice a day and we love it!
